FAQ Lights
Lights on your bike can help others see you better which helps keep everyone safe. The big considerations when looking for a light are, are you buying a light to improve your visibility to others or are you buying a light to cast a beam on your riding path to see with (like headlights on a car) ? Simply put do you want to be seen or do you want to be able to see? Finally check with your local and state government for the statutes pertaining to lights on bicycles, in most areas if you are expected to have lights on in a automobile you are required to do so on a bicycle.
Lets start off with safety lights, which help make you more visible to others. Saftey lights are low powered lights that will not cast a beam on the ground for you to see with, but definitly make you visible. You can purchase both front and rear safety lights for your bike. The front light is white to let oncoming traffic know you are coming , while the rear light is red to let those behind you know you are ahead. Both styles have flashing and steady beam modes. The flashing mode may draw more attention making you more visible, but as the ambient light gets lower it can negativly affect your vision, in those instances you should switch to steady mode. You can expect to pay between $15 to $50 for lights in this category.
High Powered Head lights allow you to ride in the lowest light conditions. These lights feature high output lamps and sophistciated beam reflection to light up the trail or road . These lights should also come with high tech batteries and battery charging systems allowing for many charging cycles. The price for these lights will normally start out around $100, be very skeptical if you find them at a lower cost.
